Mayapple (American Mandrake)

Status: Edible
Edible Parts: Ripe Fruit

Mayapple with unripe fruit

Description: This has been a very distinct plant I have recognized since childhood, but I never knew what it was until this year.  This was probably one of the easiest plants I have had to identify, I don't know of any other plant that has the same leaf structure as the Mayapple.

Preparation: Pick the ripe fruit (When the fruit has a smooth yellow skin) in August or September, it can be eaten raw or made into a jam.  I have yet to try it myself, but I am watching hoping to get some this year!
